How to add GitHub to Claude
GitHub's hosted MCP server does not register itself with Claude's custom connector sign-in yet, so the address alone does not connect on claude.ai. In Claude chats, use Claude's own GitHub integration (the + menu, Add from GitHub) to bring a repository in. For the full MCP tools, use Claude Code (below) or GitHub's local server.
How to add it to ChatGPT
ChatGPT has its own GitHub connector: Settings > Apps (Connectors in some versions), GitHub, Connect.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http github https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_GITHUB_TOKEN"
Try asking
- "Which open pull requests in my repo are waiting on me?"
- "Summarise issue 214 and suggest a fix."
Good to know
- Use a fine-grained token with only the repositories and permissions you need.
- Write tools act as you: read what it proposes before you say yes.
